Why the result is a starting point

Accuracy comes from calculation + measurement

The strongest version of this calculator does not hide disagreement between references. It shows the equation, the cross-check, and when your own stable intake is better evidence for your individual cat.

RER / MER cross-check

RER = 70 × BWkg0.75

AAHA and Merck use RER = 70 × kg^0.75, then multiply by life-stage factors. The calculator displays this as a cross-check.

Cat-specific metabolic weight

Adult cat MER ≈ factor × BWkg0.67

FEDIAF 2025 uses kg^0.67 for cats and gives separate adult, kitten, gestation and lactation references. That is the primary population model here.

BCS-derived ideal weight

Ideal BW ≈ current BW ÷ (1 + 0.1 × [BCS − 5])

For BCS 6–9, AAHA relates each point above 5/9 to roughly 10% excess body weight. The estimate is less reliable at extreme obesity.

Real-world personalization

If an ideal-BCS cat has been eating a measured number of calories, weight is stable for at least 14 days, and there are at least 3 weigh-ins, that observed intake is used as the maintenance starting point.
