For BCS 6–9, AAHA relates each point above 5/9 to roughly 10% excess body weight. The estimate is less reliable at extreme obesity.
If an ideal-BCS cat has been eating a measured number of calories, weight is stable for at least 14 days, and there are at least 3 weigh-ins, that observed intake is used as the maintenance starting point.
